Boyce Ficklen Martin Jr.

Boyce Ficklen Martin Jr. served as a judge for the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit from 1979 to 2013. Martin was born on October 23, 1935 in Boston, Massachusetts. He received a bachelor's degree from Davidson College in 1957 and a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1963. Following law school, Martin clerked for Sixth Circuit Court Judge Shackelford Miller Jr. He then joined the United States Attorney's Office for the Western District of Attorney, becoming the District's US Attorney in 1965. After serving for one year, Martin left the office to practice law in Louisville. In 1974, Martin was elected as a Judge for the Thirtieth Judicial Circuit, serving as chief judge of the Kentucky Court of Appeals from 1976 to 1979. On June, 5 1979, President Jimmy Carter nominated Martin to serve as a judge for the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, to a seat newly authorized by 92 Stat. 1969. The Senate confirmed his nomination on September 25, 1979. Martin served as chief judge from 1996 to 2003 and was a member of the Judicial Conference of the United States from 1997 to 2003. On August 16, 2013, Martin retired and lived in Louisville until his death on June 1, 2016.
